Alex stayed with me for one night. First of all, he came up to my apartment with the coolest interactive hologram set up I've ever seen. That was awesome. Also, he was so friendly and comfortable to be around. I threw a party that night, which Alex was totally cool about even though he had an early flight the next day. I had so much fun hosting him. He was a great addition to my party, and a great addition to my apartment for one night.

PHILOSOPHY
I like to DO things. This is harder than it sounds.
Why I'm on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I keep an open couch. When I travel, I'll sleep on your couch. hooray!
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I started out by unexpectedly hosting a loud guitar-playing green-bearded viking who wound up staying for a month, quickly followed by a couple people who were really quiet, and a cool swiss guy who helped me in my quest to ride crazy bikes through boston, a gaggle of french exchange students from canada, a striking playwright, a busker from texas, an awesome swedish woman traveling around the world and an army of Quebecois that silently appeared, showered and then disappeared two days later. As I traveled around the world, I stayed with wonderful people in Montreal, Joburg and San Diego. I eventually just turned my apartment in LA into a CS pseudo hostel and perpetually had surfers coming, crashing and going. It was fantastic! I recently drove back to Boston and surfed my way across the country, sleeping on desert mattresses under Mexican city lights and swimming in Austin rivers on the way. I couchsurfed all around India recently, and had an awesome time running around with the Ahmedabad CS group and motorcycle gang while I was living there. Hosted a bunch of people in Boston and Hong Kong, surfed with nihilistic russians in Shenzhen and lovely grandparents in Guangzhou. Successfully fended off an armada of couchsurfing spaniards in Hong Kong without being colonized. Shipwrecked in the south china sea with pittsburgh hackers, night swimming with ze germans, crashing on air mattresses covered in accordion parts in Amherst, naked sushi with an awesome dude in Kansas City--I had no idea that they had sushi OR nudity in Kansas. Bob Marley addicts, deported spaniards en route to Europe and yodeling israelis in Manila. Every time something awesome happens to me through CS, I just tack it on here. I want this list to grow!
Teach, Learn, Share
I'll teach you how to slackline like you've got dreadlocks and bake bread from scratch like a badass. Also on the docket is lockpicking, riding motorcycles, rappelling and other fundamentals of life in high society.
I love it when people teach me things about music. I love learning more about singing and playing guitar. And dancing!
And simple tricks that I can use every day are awesome. Ways to fold T shirts and sketch and cut vegetables. Show me what you've got!
One amazing thing I've done
I've trusted my life to myself
Music, movies & books
lots. murakami, edward abbey, woody allen, HST, neil gaiman, jack kerouac, more jack kerouac, ginsberg, cassady, frickin Bukowski, leonard cohen, Palahniuk, I'm really into indie music, starting to like underground hip hop, and I firmly believe that nothing bad came out of the 80s. The Stars, Unicorns, Handsome Boy Modeling School, Songs Ohia, Stephen Malkmus, Spoon, the Smiths, the Arcade Fire, Tom Waits, the Magnetic Fields, the 6ths, Lovage, Billy Joel, the national, Murs, DJ Z-trip, Paul Simon, Leonard fucking Cohen,...the list goes on. I also have an ongoing love affair with all rock that comes out of canada.Recently, I've been on a fiddle&folk kinda kick--newfie and irish and old-time, anything that gets my feet thumping and your fingers snapping.
Interests
To name a few, I like building things, social change, turning everyone into an inventor, making solar panels, living freely and independently, riding 'altered' bicycles, invention, singing show tunes with helium in my lungs, clean tech, running marathons, mopeds and motorcycles, slacklining, dumpster diving, having faith in humanity, hiking, rock climbing, writing, urban climbing, urban spelunking, paragliding, kites, ultimate, indie music, wind-powered land vehicles, incubators, computers and robots, sailing, solar energy, electronics, and saving the world.
My main interest these days is how to become an Independent Human Being, which is a concept that excites me very much.

About my home
You'll either be in a pullout couch in our living room or a pullout couch in our office/workroom. Everything's pretty comfy and warm.
Who you'll meet
In my house, you'll find me, my wife Hannah, and if you come after January 2015, a tiny screaming human.
Getting there
It's easy to take a train or chinatown bus to providence from anywhere on the east coast (and probably beyond), and there's a pretty good bus system that comes a block from our house. Taxis are also cheap(ish) in providence -- it's about $10 to get anywhere in town

Alex is amazing person, he host me in Manila for a week. He is very resourceful person and can talk with him for everything.
Alex host me in his mini private park, we enjoy camping outside in the hot nights. He is very enthusiastic and easy going person, great problem solver. He teached me to walk on rope and play frisby. We ride together on his motorbike around Manila. He was the first who tried to ride my new creation, FWD MBB Recumbent Bike.
Alex is one sincerely awesome dude! He graciously let us crash in his beautiful home and enjoy the comforts of his gazebo, PLUS he showed us some of the best sides of Manila. Also, he is going to save the world, so watch out for that.
I'd like to tell a story, but actually, it's really hard to decide which story to tell, so I'll just give you headlines, if you don't mind ....

I can go on... maybe next time .
he's a really nice, and really funNy guy. I have Had a great night out together in Quezon Manila. :)
Alex is the radiating core of every group. He shines like the brightest sun in any situation. His presence gives people the crazy idea that they can do anything they can imagine and often with his help they can.
We've successfully hauled a Prius out of a mountain snow bank with our teeth during a cross country roadtrip startup. I've seen him whip up robot code at 4AM after a day slacklining and guitaring.
The only time I've heard him complain was after being stung in the penis by a jellyfish. And it was only a mild wimper. This man is a hero.
If there's one person in this world that gives me hope for the future it's Alexis Nathaniel Hornstein III.
Hosted Alex when he was here in Manila looking for some great talent that help make his invention lab a reality. He's a very easy going guy with a lot of cool ideas and big dreams. One night he was showing me stuff about solar power on his computer, and the next night he was tinkering away with some newly-bought wires and... ummm... stuff I cannot name. Gotta give it to him though, he makes complex stuff so simple to comprehend :)
Talk about really friendly and easy going. I introduced him to a couple of friends and soon enough, they were hanging out and traveling even without me! Awesome! (Because I am so busy with work, I actually feel like I'm a terrible host not being available for my guests. Boo!)
Best of luck with your projects. Message me when they're already done! I wanna seeeeeee!
I get along with all my surfers, most of the time anyway... but seldom do I meet someone who is inspiring, smart, a great communicator and just an all around amazing person... this is who Alex is!
A gracious host -- to a point where I got some omelets for breakfast and even learned how to ride a motorcycle through free lessons!
I look forward to your return, mi hermano! I will be sure to have more time then! P.S. Try not to run around HK screaming French revolution slogans, ok? LOL!
I really enjoyed hanging with Alex during his brief stay. We shared stories over soup and wine. After dinner, he took a 3D picture of my face with an Xbox Kinect camera and then programmed a Makerbot (3D printer) to print it! That was rad. While it was printing, he joined my roommate and me in going to the epitome of Yinzer bars, where we played silly ping pong.
Alex, happy travels! You're welcome back anytime!
Alex is the most amazing and invigorating guest. He is both incredibly smart (MIT) grad and also sweet as can be. He can be interactive and hang out if you like, and he is also entirely self-sufficient. The perfect house-guest. We're so lucky to have him visit us and enrich our lives!~

Alex stayed on my couch while travelling south to Mexico. He brought along a 3D printer and a ton of good stories to share. Overall a good experience and I would definitely host him again.
We surfed for 2 fabulous nights on Lamma with Alex. Such a cool guy- made us feel very welcome, showed us some great local spots and took us swimming with the bio-luminescent plankton in his hand built boat (the highlight of my vacation) Definitely worth a surf :)
Alex....
Man, to stay with him was a pleasure all the time. He is such an honest and kind guy. It's fun to hang out with him, you feel relaxed and you can just be yourself... which is what I appreciate much!
Interesting person!!! Don't miss out to meet him! And ask about his job/hobby... its amazing!
Thank you sooo much for those beautiful night swims. It was an extraordinary experience, I will never forget! Thank you!!! Hope to meet you along the road, or back in Germany. Hope to host you one day and give you something back!
This guy, this dude right here. This is the guy.
He's got an island, he's got the fire dragon juice, and he's got a fiddle.
And while I never heard the fiddle, I do believe that it exists.
Travel guide Hornstein, thank you good sir for the most hospitable of stays. And just so you know, there's a whole pile of stuff on my couch with your name on it, waiting to be invented.
Good host, great talks about the USA, China, innovation, shared his place with me very simply, and quite saved my night ! (I was going to sleep in an university's corridor.)
If you have ever seen Back to the Future then you surely remember Doctor Emmett "Doc" Brown. Alex, with all his crazy inventions and 100% fun, adventurous personality, is a true modern version of him. I wanted to stay with Alex immediately after seeing his profile so the fact that he accepted my request and welcomed me to his rooftop flat on Lamma island was a true luck for me. Being around Alex means constant laughter and awesome conversations. He is always up for a nice ‘little’ shot of vodka which means that he is now on the top of the list for me. :P Alex, it’s my turn to show you my rooftop so I’m waiting for you and your flatmate in GZ. Kisses!
Alex is the kind of person who upon seeing instructions for building a boat on the internet actually goes away and builds a boat. This is a good kind of person to have nearby should you find yourself in need of adventure.
Alex is also a cyborg, which is nice.
Alex was a great host and introduced me to the couchsurfing experience. The couch was really the most neglect-able (though comfortable) part of our encounter. We had plenty of talks about living in China, technology, inventions and bribery. This guy doesn't sit around for things to happen. He is always on the move doing something, be it slack-lining (he introduced me to that to), building a boat or hunting some delicious vegetarian food.
Thank you, Alex!
Alex is such a fun person! He was kind enough to invite me on his day and showed me the local Hong Kong I was looking for. He's not a bad slackliner either!
Alex and his roommates are totally relaxed and inviting and are each engaged in interesting positive projects around Asia. Alex is a totally inspirational guy who has a lot to share which makes staying with him an experience that I hope I will be able to repeat again sometime in the future. One unusual thing I took away from my stay in Kowloon was a previously undiscovered interest in Slack-lining! Thanks!
When I saw Alex CS profile I decided to meet this amazing guy by all means. And of course I wasn't disappointed. I stayed at his cozy place for 3 days and it was 3 days of fun. We went to CS party (oh yea, I remember these bunny ears), went fishing in dirty HK water and we ate some weird Chinese food. Alex is an intelligent and energetic person and a thoughtful host. I would love to meet him again!
We met Alex in HK and he introduced us to swing dancing. Which was a lot of fun despite our two left feet. A very nice adventurous guy.
Alex is a rare soul. He is simultaneously one of the most intense people that I know and one of the most chill. He plays a fiddle on his dilapidated rooftop but does it with abandon. He cajoles people into midnight slack lining sessions but then practices walking backwards on the line while drinking beer. What can I say?...a visit with Alex is a visit sure to become an adventure. Message him if you are looking to have a unique trip!
Mike and I spent four days surfing in Alex's roof top house in Kowloon. It was a great experience. We dished out streaky bacon to strangers, Mike rolled his belly in public, we all drank guinness (some of us added blackcurrant), we learnt how to pick locks and discovered a Thai area close to Alex's house. Alex - we'll let you know as soon as we have a couch and will happily welcome you!
Alex is AWESOME!
When the creator of couchsurfer was thinking about it, he thought in persons like Alex. We spent a great time in his cool roof house and learned lots of amazing things. It's a pitty, but our english is not good enough for say all the great things we can say about Alex.
If there was the option of putting "superpositive" experience, I would definitely do it. Alex is the perfect couchsurfer! He's also spontaneous, intelligent and fun. And so are his housemates. What else can one ask for? frankly...Nothing.
Alex is very interesting person. It was nice to have a chat with him about few meaningless life questions and exchange a few simple life stories. He gave me the simple idea, which still bothers me...."We live in future..."
You'll be entertained to no end with Alex...his stories are great and funny, he's a lovely host and very easy going.
Yeah, let's do that slacklining!!
Alex hosted me and my friend on our visit in hong kong for one night! He is really nice and trustable, with great sence of humour. He gave us great excursion to the fish streets and vegetarian (i don't know if this is vegeterian, but i'm gonna try..) food :) Thanks Alex! If you ever come to Finland, there's a place for you to stay!
Yes, Alex came in with the most amazing and royal worthy gourd I've ever seen! It currently sits on my porch, greeting all who enter the Castle. Alex was a great conversationalist and beer drinker, two mandated attributes for staying at the Castle! Most impressive was how Alex really went out of his way to get to know me. I wish we would've had more time. Thanks for spending your hard earned money on the most impressive melon I've ever seen! Shalom!
Met Alex via an event in Boston and very much enjoyed his authentic person and genuine interest in learning and growing. Very explorative and honest about life and what how he participates within it.
He is excellent at giving me food. I like howling along while he plays the mouth harp.
Alex is an amazing person. He builds stuff and has this entrepeneur spirit that can change the world. He hosted me during my stay in Cambridge and I am extremely grategul for that - not to mention the unforgettable MIT rooftop tour! Hope to see you in SP soon!
My relationship with Alex has been very manly right from the beginning. We sent each other an avalanche of obscenities with a few racial slurs here and there. When he finally knocked on the door, we instantly popped boners and started eating raw meat on the floor. The whole week-end was a big fun party made of bread, bikes and duck hunt. Bravo! Bravo!
Wow, what to say about Alex. He is the easiest person every to get along with, he has amazing taste in music & so much positive energy you'll smile till your face hurts. He's brilliant & he has heart, a great combination. I hope our paths cross again one day & if you have a chance to meet this fine fellow, do it.
hola Alex!
I think i cannot miss meeting people like him in Ahmedabad. It's been a pleasure
Another place we'll get treeclimbing, I reckon.
the organizer of the trip... adventurous, daring, friendly, witty, uber-cool, loves biking.. game to try anything new.. got a fine eye for details.. a good planner.. someone who puts his heart n soul in wot he does..u rock dude.. hope we can have another trip before he goes back to the States...
Me and Alex first met on a decommissioned naval base in Alameda California through our friend Star.
The three of us explored an abandoned village on the base and found a squatters paradise (one of the houses we made it into still had running water).
We have met once on the East coast when Alex & Co. crashed at my place in Brooklyn for the night.
He is a great person who is fiercely intelligent and will make any couchsurfing experience memorable.
What a positive & energetic person he is. Had a wonderful time meeting him couple of times in Ahmedabad. Always smiling.
He made local CS community more happening with his presence. He taught us the new sport "Slacklining" during our Law Garden meet & he is also leading a first CS trip to Abu.
You rocks man, keep it up...
:-}
Remember meeting Alex in Ahmedabad over an evening coffee. It followed up with couple of CS gatherings and then the ever memorable Mt. Abu bike trip happened. Got to know this guy a little more better. He exuberates energy, comes up with real crazy ideas out of the blue, has very pertinent thoughts about life and to say the least he's a real doer. Have met very few people like you Alex, you are truly unique. :)
You will never be bored if you hang out with Alex!
One word- One man Army.
Very hard working.
Taught us like big brother.Ground to earth with evrybody.
May in feture,we will meet again
Nice guy....fun loving...full of vigour and the best part i felt was his desire to share...taught us slackling..we had a good time.
Alex taught a group of like 20 of us slacklining one hot and humid Ahmedabad night. He couldn't have made it more fun! Awesome fun dude.
In the short time we hung out, Alex left a lasting impression on me given his great sense of humor about himself and about everything around him, his confidence, his desire for adventure, and his attitude towards learning new things. He is such a unique person... and just a REALLY COOL DUDE. I am really looking forward to hanging out again!
It was a great experiance chatting with Alex and learning Slackling with him during Law Garden CS Meet. He gets along very well with everybody and gets talking really fast. He has travelled a lot and has great tales to tell. Don't miss a chance to host him. Looking forward to meeting him again.
Alex is such an amazing guest to have. He has a great sense of humor, and is always game for having a good time. His passion to travel and work at various countries around the World is truly admirable. He taught us to slackline, came for a BangCS house party, and also joined us for the Bengaluru Pride parade!
nice person to talk with...enjoyed the time spend with him...look forward to meet him again for a longer time...i hope you will have nice stay in Ahmedabad...
Alex is among the most exciting people in the world. He's always up to something, quite possibly up for anything, and definitely worth knowing.
He was my second couchsurfer, or better, he came with Inês, and they together were my first! He is a very funny person, a “crazy inventor” (my father and I really want to see something made by him, he let us very curious). He taught me how to say MASELTOF (I don’t know how to write), and I show him the capivaras too. I hope see you and Inês again, You are both nice people!
I hosted him one day at my house, unfortunataly he was with no time, only sleept and go away on the next day.
A very very very great person =) that love motorcicles :P
Good luck in your travel friend.
Alex appeared with a jug of Carlo Rossi and a genuine passion for life. In exchange we observed gaudy holiday lights, cycled in the cold, and numbed our brains with simple movies. Good times were had, and would gladly host again.
Alex and I tinkered in a workshop together with some bikes....
Alex and his friend Heather were wonderful people to host - had I not a busy schedule for work I would love to have stayed up later to show them how fun Providence can be - - hopefully see you guys in Cambridge in the not to distant future!
CouchSufing's crème de la crème!! Met at the Library Bar, shared some Chimay (best beer ever), dropped a Land Surfer on the 210, flew kites on a dry lake bed, trolleyed to the Griffith Observatory, shared unlawful waffle non-awful falafels, gelechtered at a Jewish comedy show, animated astronauts with no arms, picnicked at the Rose Bowl, Lindy Hopped with Masonics, techno-ed with rainbows, dined on fine dumpster pudding, played silly drawing games, and shared custody of lovely Couchsurfers at his place! lolol In return he drank my Slimfast, showered me in glass shards, broke into my house and stole my heart! He's a once in a lifetime kind of man. Meet him and FEEL ALIVE - You'll see! L.A. won't be as beautiful without you! :(
alex is...how shall we say...a fascinating individual. and of course by fascinating i mean awesome. he's up for anything, and makes everything fun. as far as i can tell, he's about 26 times smarter than me, which is why i enjoyed ripping his jokes to shreds whenever possible. gotta save the self-esteem somehow. he's full of entertaining stories and tidbits, and was a delightful host and boston city guide. riding in his car is like a journey of discovery all its own...absurd berenstain bears jokes, bob's big boy bobbleheads, you name it. robots have some amazing company in alex.
in a giant hangar warehouse garage taco neighborhood
Alex is landrollering, paragliding, and designing steam turbine generator systems powered by the sun... he's living his dream, and it's a beautiful one!
WHOA!! At the first encounter, his warmth and openness is evident. Alex's life is the chronicles of Narnia! Full of energy, life, ideas, magic and debauchery! He is a cool MOFO people MEET HIMMM and HOST him and feed him!! Definitely the strawberry Starburst!! Sorry for kicking your ass in wrestling! Its such a shame not to meet this kid. You got a friend here for life bro
Met climbing in J-Tree, he played guitar, fun and brilliant guy.

Really liked kicking it with Alex. He's warm, full of energy and pizazz, and a generous host. He was even a good sport after we conned him (yes, a vegetarian) into meeting us at a Korean BBQ carnivore's extravaganza! Take care, Alex! We wish you the best of luck as you solve our nation's energy crisis and save the world :)
WE SURFED WITH DOLPHINS. Sorry, still not over it. Alex is the best.
Alex, cheers for letting me crash at yours and being a gracious host. Anybody reading this it is the same as the other references this guy is a reason couch surfing is a great community. Sorry it was so short lived and I hope you have a great time travelling this summer. Wish you all the best and hope you manage to become a mutli-gazillionaire.
never turn down the oppurtunity to surf/host/surf with this man! i had the best time while with him. He is goofy, intelligent, and very adventurous. oh yeah, and spontaneous. he also helped me accomplish a major goal for me, which was to learn to weld. it meant a lot.
i sincerely hope i have the chance to host him and his girlie on their roadtrip this summer in Chicago.
alex is a great host. he'll teach you things you never knew about dumpster diving. it'll change your life.
We fertilized the rough streets of LA, sipped pale ales, and ended up at one of downtown's more interesting establishments. In all, a great few days, made even better by the fact that I brought him together with another local CSer. Shall we meet again in Boston?
Alex is fantastic. Man has the healthiest relationship with the world I've ever seen.
Alex the most amazing, hospitable, unbelievably positive guy i've ever met. He single-handedly turned my road trip into a success, kudos to whoever/whatever is responsible for this caliber of person being able to exist. Hanging out with him is like experiencing a kerouac novel. He'll even sing to you while you shower! (i'm sure he would if you asked).
Alex is so many kinds of genius. He's bravely adventurous, wildly entertaining, deeply thoughtful, insatiably curious, and awesome company in general. He brought so much spice to our gang of campers and climbers, with his campfire guitar, encyclopedia of songs, and crazy stories! Alex, I hope we see you again for more SoCal adventures!
Alex you are a person full of life. We sincerely enjoyed meeting you and your friends. We hope our paths cross again one day.
Alex is awesome, Alex is great. Meet this man for he is a very memorable soul. Inspiring: spewing hope for a new and better world.
Solid guy, offered me his place through an acquaintance at work when I just moved to town. Made me feel really welcome to a new area, turned out I didn't need the place but getting the offer really meant a lot.
Alex!!!! You have to say his name like that, he is that much fun. When a couchsurfer brings a bullwhip and tequila, you know the experience is going to be in the double digit points zone. I can't wait to jump up to La-La land and go dumpster diving with him! If you do not host this guy, your brain no workie good.
We were in his house for 3nights and all the time we tried to do his best to make switch us in LA! Funny and awesome man!
wow! to meet Alex, a true modern day daVinvi(one of my heros) was a pleasure. finally a rocket scientist at my disposal to talk to about quantum physics, mechanics, and tea(yah i know random).
this guy is McGyver.
Yeah... Alex is pretty off-the-charts awesome. Like, I've been bragging that I met this guy. I want my sister to marry him. Wonderful, wonderful person.
I've always thought the world could use another inventor, alex just seems to be the one we may have all been looking for. keep up the inovation and change the world man!
He couchsurfed my futon in Montreal and he seemed to be a really trustworthy guy. Had a nice time showing him around the city. Great couchsurfer!
NPLS!
